Save the good recommendation before the chat moves on.

Keep the specific link, a recognizable title and one sentence about why you want it. That small record is easier to return to than a screenshot of a conversation or a memory of who might have sent it.

Find the recommendation, not just the conversation

If the link is already buried, search the chat for one detail you remember: the author's surname, a word in the title, the publication or the topic. Start with the likely conversation when you can. A concrete term such as “octopus” is easier to work with than “that interesting article.”

Look for the original message containing the link. A later reply may refer to the same topic without pointing to the same article. Open the destination and check its title before you save it. For a podcast, confirm that it is the recommended episode rather than the show's homepage; for a book, check both title and author.

Your messaging app may already provide a useful place to return. Apple's Shared with You can surface supported Messages content in apps including Safari and Podcasts. It also supports pinning eligible content and returning to the sender's conversation. Try that if your recommendations mostly arrive through Messages; you may not need another collection.

Keep three things with each find

  • What: the title, creator and specific original link.
  • Why: one sentence about the part that interests you.
  • From: a private reminder of who suggested it, if useful.

For example, imagine a friend sends an essay about neighborhood trees. “City trees essay — Maya suggested it because of the section on shade at bus stops” gives you both a search term and a reason to read. You do not need to copy the surrounding chat, other people's replies or a screenshot containing their names.

Keep the full usable publisher link, especially when your friend sent a gift link. Extra URL parameters can be part of how that link works. A saved reference does not extend its access period or provide an independent copy of the article.

Move the link into ReadRex

  1. Copy the article or episode link from the message, then open ReadRex in your browser.
  2. Choose Save something and paste it. Check the title; use Edit details if it needs correcting or you want to set the format.
  3. Choose your shelf and visibility, then save. For a book mentioned without a link, use the book option and verify the author.
  4. Open the saved item and its Your take tab. Add your reminder under Private notes, then choose Save changes.

ReadRex does not connect to your messaging accounts or import chat history. This copy-and-save workflow works without giving it access to your conversations. Start with the next useful recommendation you receive; transferring your entire message history is unnecessary.

Decide what can leave the conversation

In ReadRex, a new save starts on Up next with Only me visibility. You can choose a Friends default in preferences or change visibility for each save. Friends visibility lets approved connections see the shelf item. Notes and tags remain private even when a shelf item is visible.

A person's recommendation may be safe to remember privately without being something they want attributed to them in a wider circle. Keep their personal explanation in your private note, or write your own description if you later recommend the piece. Saving, finishing and recommending are separate choices. Choosing Only me also withdraws an existing ReadRex recommendation.

Use an ordinary article link for reading; keep private work documents and other access-controlled material in the systems where they belong. A saved URL does not transfer the sender's permission to view it.

Give yourself a way to find it again

Later, open Up next and search for the title, topic or name you put in your private note. In the example above, “Maya” or “bus stops” can bring the memory back without scrolling through a week of messages.

After reading, mark the item Finished if you want it in your history. If you would like to thank the friend, return to the original chat yourself; ReadRex does not send them a message or a reading receipt. If you want to recommend the item inside ReadRex, follow the separate friend recommendation workflow.

The capture is successful when you can find the specific thing and remember why it interested you. For the next step, use the time you have to choose which saved recommendation to open.
